Architecture Portfolio |
Introduction There are cool, irrigated citrus groves in the shadow of Camelback Mountain, pocketed with Spanish revival, adobe, and mid-century modern ranch homes, and forests of giant saguaro cacti in the foothills to the north, often populated by the most cutting-edge designs, and rows of majestic date palms lining streets of historic homes in central Phoenix. Not to mention a rich urban landscape that includes modern in-fill architecture, loft projects and stunning high-rise towers. For those who appreciate architecture and design, the serenity and dramatic beauty of the Sonoran desert have provided the perfect backdrop to showcase great architecture and innovative design. From the romance of Wallace Neff and Frank Lloyd Wright to the Case-study modernist architects and new “desert school” designs, Arizona architecture is world class. The following homes are an architecture reference guide to the diverse architectural solutions represented in our area. Original designs from Frank Lloyd Wright, Al Beadle, Will Bruder, Jones Studio, and others; plus prime examples of mid-century modern, Case-study, historic and ranch. Some designs and architects you may recognize, others may remain obscure, but all are unique. None of these examples of architecture are for sale. Please respect the owners privacy. We intend to update this portfolio often to bring you an ongoing dialog of area architecture. It’s all part of what we call “Defining Desert Living.”

David Wright Residence
The David Wright Residence was the designed in 1950 by Frank Lloyd Wright for this fourth son from his first marriage. Intended as a Desert Dwelling, the residence is lifted off of the desert floor in a spiraling design, a ramp-way provides access; all terminating in the master suite. Such design allowed for systems placement and concealment as well as to catch a gentle desert breeze. A reinforced concrete floor cantilevers the space and the interiors are of Philippine mahogany. A beautiful home, it gracefully curls on itself, while maintaining a subtle elevation above the landscape that provides stunning views of Camelback Mountain, intentionally placed at a height above the surrounding citrus orchards, now all but gone or built-out with residences. Mr. David Wright was involved with the design, manufacture and marketing of concrete block so the original design was modified slightly in planning by Mr. Wesley Peters to accommodate the block construction. A custom concrete block frieze adorns this graceful gem. The David Wright Residence was the last FLLW designed home continually used by the family of Mr. Wright in Arizona. |

CSH Pacific Palisades If it's an icon of design you are looking for, this could be it. For those interested in design, you have to look no further than this steel-assembly home. Conceived with industrially sourced parts, it was proposed that the home they designed would be for a married couple working in design and graphic arts, whose children were no longer living at home. They wanted a home that would make no demands for itself, and would serve as a background for: "life in work" and with nature as a "shock absorber." Okay, so now you've guessed it: We're talking about a home no other than that of Charles and Ray Eames! Take a moment to wish Charles a Happy Birthday (JUNE 17th) and make this the day you join the Eames Foundation.... Be sure to visit this link: http://eamesfoundation.org/ and become a member today! HAPPY BIRTHDAY with thanks for all the icons of design we love to use each and every day! PS see the virtual tour to learn more... |

The Washburn House - Blaine Drake Architect Designed by Drake in 1955 and later remodeled by Al Beadle, this one-of-kind property was completely updated and restored in 2005, returning it to the Desert Modern ethic it deserved. The current remodel captures original architecture but updated all systems, including renovation of the signature round pool this home is known for. Architect Blaine Drake was one of Frank Lloyd Wright's original apprentices at Taliesin, Wisconsin, in 1933, and went on to establish his Arizona practice in 1945. He designed approximately two hundred projects during his long career, nearly two-thirds of which were built. Most of his work was in the Phoenix area and focused on residential architecture, though he also designed office, medical, and apartment buildings and churches. One of the few Wright apprentices to pursue a successful independent practice, Drake was an advocate of energy-efficient design in the desert. He received national and international recognition for his work. Blaine Drake retired from architectural practice in 1985. He passed away in 1993. |

Casa Blanca Inn THE CASA BLANCA INN - SOME HISTORY: The History of the Casa Blanca Inn is fascinating. Originally it was the home of the Donald Kellogg family. It was designed/built by R.T. "Bob" Evans in the 1920’s, the same Architect that gave us the Jokake Inn and other notable Pueblo and Spanish Colonial revival homes in the Camelback Mountain Area. Later it became the Casa Blanca Inn which was primarily used by the Warner Borg company in the late 1940’s as a corporate retreat, complete with its own landing strip. It opened to the public circa the early 1950s and continued to operate as a resort through the 1970’s (I still remember many a meal at the Inn’s famed restaurant: “the Sultan’s Table” ). In the 1980‘s the resort was converted to residences with additions and new homes designed by Architect George Christensen. Casa Blanca remains an unequaled address with a fantastic location, superb views and rich history. There is simply nothing else like it! |

Designed by Drake in 1955 and remodeled by Al Beadle in 1966, this one-of-kind property was completely updated and restored in 2005, returning it to the Desert Modern ethic it deserved. The current remodel captures original architecture but updates all systems, including renovation of the signature round pool this home is known for. R Combining an amazingly private desert lot with a perfect central PV location, this is a loving restoration of a classic Mid-century Modern Post & Beam home; completely irreplaceable. It is a good example or Mr. Drake's very early work. Boardwalk Condominiums
Iconic design by Alfred Newman Beadle. Originaly designed as garden apartments, these remain a signature examle of Beadle's work. Boardwalk was named in reference to the board-built entry and paths, most of which has been replaced, much now in steel. Each unit faces the garden path entry. ABOUT THE BOARDWALK: These highly coveted mid-century design originally built as garden apartments, remains a consummate example of Beadle’s legacy. With each unit facing a garden path entry, simple post and beam construction and walls of glass, Beadle laid the groundwork for lasting and timeless architecture. Always rare to the market and practically impervious to market conditions, units do not last long. Location, iconic design, forward thinking and scarcity all factor in to the equation. |

Next Level of Modern Green Living
The panoramic valley, city light, and mountain views are just the beginning of the highlights for this Troon Tusayan hillside home. Built by Construction Zone, the simple concept was to create a home that is conscious of its environment and will provide generations of healthy living. Glass, steel, stone, and concrete are the building blocks, and the mountain’s constant breezes are fully utilized to aid in cooling and heating the structures. Solar panels act as inconspicuous awnings and reduce power consumption to that of a home 1/5 the size. Radiant heated floors and radiant cooled concrete ceilings masterfully eliminate any need for forced air. Limestone flooring throughout helps to merge all of the interior and exterior living space. Custom solid walnut cabinets, and limestone counters. A peaceful stream meanders through the outdoor oasis and ends in a pool with sweeping sunset and city light views. Ideal for entertaining, inside or out. Lower 1,000sqft structure easily converts to living area, studio, workshop, or multiple car showroom. The House of Earth and Light: Marwan Al Sayed
House of Earth and Light: Marwan Al Sayed Architect. One of the finest examples of modern desert architecture we have ever offered! City-Az/Desert Living selected this internationally recognized, well published, award winning home as one of the ten best examples of Valley Architecture. Superb design and unmatched structural integrity with detailed use of steel, cast concrete and earthen-concrete "poured-earth" construction. Exceptional features include rare select hardwoods, polished concrete floors, and a brilliant cascade of natural light from generous windows. Originally conceived and built with an innovative and unique canvas/cloth roof system: hand cut glass insets, cast glass lighting, sinks and corner-blocks. In addition to the home there is a large studio/shop and steel parking structure, which has now been converted in part to a guest suite. The entire home offers a very high level of detail and standard of construction. The roof System has been replaced with a more conventional design that incorporates the sculptural trusses, and the design utilizes the rhythm of the span by inserting skylights that maintain the ethereal flood of natural light found in the original design by Mr. Sayed. This home graced the original issue of DWELL magazine and has been written about, discussed and published, featured and photographed many times since then. Homage must be paid to the original owners, a modernist couple that labored at length to realize the design and concept, even at great personal cost, and to the current owners who have cherished the home, detailing and completing it to realize it's highest level of design and function, while retaining the highest level of respect for the original concept. Uniquely connected with the desert arroyo site, this home enchants you with calm interiors and interaction with the abundant native plants and trees found on this natural desert arroyo site. Matthews Residence - Will Bruder Architect - Adobe
The Matthews Residence was designed by architect Will Bruder and was constructed between 1979-1980. it was the recipient of the 1983 Environmental Excellence Award. A curvilinear adaptation of a Southwestern courtyard home, it features stabilized Adobe construction & curved walls to minimize sun exposure. Spanning a double cul-de-sac lot it is located in a suburban setting on the west part of Phoenix. An interesting play of both large and intimate spaces that interact with geometry of pure curves heightened by the great sense of light, compression and release found in the design. A strip skylight flows from the entry and adds a wonderful element to the space, this light-play also brings to the forefront the interaction of the rather rough material elements of the Adobe and Concrete floors, against the rather refined Oak and Galvanized steel details. this is the only Bruder home we know of that was ever constructed from Adobe. The way it was handled is extremely interesting, making this quite a unique home and one of our favorite Bruder designs. |

Manker Residence - Blaine Drake Architect
The Manker home was designed by Architect Blaine Drake for the Dr. Raymond Manker Family, when called to be the minister for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Phoenix, whose newly completed building on Lincoln Drive in Paradise Valley was also designed by Blake in 1961. Today, the Manker home remains a cherished example of Mr. Drake's work. Inside, the original nature and materiality of the home has been widely maintained, excepting some very sensitive updates that were made with the assistance of Architect John Douglas. This home features superb views of the surrounding mountains, and interiors that include the original Mahogany millwork and cabinets, plus butt-glazed windows, dramatic steel and concrete fireplace, post and beam exposed framing and wood ceilings.
Architect Blaine Drake was one of Frank Lloyd Wright's original apprentices and went on to establish his Arizona practice in 1945. Built for and with the original Owners who still reside in the home, this house is a beautiful study in light and space; a perfect example of how delicately architecture can sit upon the landscape in the Desert. Adjacent to a wide and beautiful arroyo, this home features a large walk out deck to the west, which opens up the home to the views and natural landscape. More about Architect Blaine Drake: Mr Drake was one of Frank Lloyd Wright's original apprentices and went on to establish his Arizona practice in 1945. According to ASU, Mr. Drake designed approximately two hundred projects during his career, nearly two-thirds of which were constructed. Thankfully, for us in Arizona, most of his work was in the Phoenix area and focused on residential architecture, though he also designed office, medical, and apartment buildings and churches. Mr. Drake was one of the few Wright apprentices to pursue a successful independent practice. He was an advocate of energy-efficient design in the desert. He received national and international recognition for his work. Blaine Drake retired from architectural practice in 1985. His remaining buildings are indeed very special. |

McAlmon House - Silverlake, Los Angeles
The McAlmon House, a residential complex in two parts, is among the most sculptural of the homes Schindler built in his enduring career. Set seemingly precariously on a hilltop, the project heavily reformed an existing small bungalow at street level and utilized it as a dramatized prelude of the main house on the hillside above it. The older structure was rendered almost entirely anew in Schindler's vocabulary of asymmetrical geometric forms, but integrated the original pitched roof - a tangible reminder of earlier styles of Southern California while actively re-imagining the architecture of Los Angeles's future. THE CASA BLANCA INN - SOME HISTORY: The History of the Casa Blanca Inn is fascinating. Originally it was the home of the Donald Kellogg family. It was designed/built by R.T. "Bob" Evans in the 1920’s, the same Architect that gave us the Jokake Inn and other notable Pueblo and Spanish Colonial revival homes in the Camelback Mountain Area. Later it became the Casa Blanca Inn which was primarily used by the Borg-Warner Company in the late 1940’s as a corporate retreat, complete with its own landing strip. It opened to the public circa the early 1950s and continued to operate as a resort through the 1970’s (I still remember many a meal at “the Sultan’s Table” , the Inn’s famed restaurant). In the 1980‘s the resort was converted to residences with additions and new homes designed by Architect George Christensen. Casa Blanca remains an unequaled address with a fantastic location, superb views and rich history. There is simply nothing else like it!

White Gates
“A House That Calls It’s Family To Order” was the headline of an article featuring The White Gates Residence that was published in 1961 in the magazine, Living For Young Homemakers, and harking back to a time where simplicity ruled. And with simplicity came organization, clarity and honesty! Being one of Beadles first designs (1957), his own residence and designed to accommodate his growing family, not only was it clearly ahead of it’s time, but a true statement in early modernism. Quite possibly Beadle’s most well know designs with numerous publishing credits, it remains one of his most famous designs and cherished locally by every architecture enthusiast. Today, the house still proudly “floats” above the desert floor in it’s dramatic setting at the base of Camelback Mountain, as Mr. Beadle intended and in all of it’s sublime and monolithic glory, but sadly in need of a major restoration. The current owners have already gone through great lengths with the city, preservation and restorative designs by local architects to bring this historically significant home back to life, and to make the same simple statement it did in 1957. |

Guirey Residence - Arizona Architecture Classic
There remain a handful of residences in the Valley that define a generation of Architects that shaped, influenced and defined how we choose to live in Arizona. The Guirey Residence is one of them. Originally designed and conceived in the 1940’s, it grew with the Architect’s family and needs. Today, it remains a shining example of regional Modernism that has been untouched and unaltered by trend or fashion, maintaining a timeless elegance that clearly speaks to the place we live, the time and materials we used, and an ethic of scale, craft and detail virtually unobtainable today. Mr. Guirey and his work signified an early generation of Architects who came to Arizona and were instrumental in creating a heritage of modern design that endures today. His design legacy is broad and unique, but is perhaps best represented in this home. Admired for decades by every Phoenician who has viewed it or simply passed by it, it remains THAT house that inspires dreams and interest to this day, a fitting testimony to the quiet horizontal line that echoes the site so effortlessly. Rarely do we see a home as perfected and preserved as this one. Even rarer is the ease of living that you’ll find in it. The design and details defy time; the home would be as contemporary to live in today as it would have been in the 1950’s. The spaces are filled with perfectly filtered light that is carefully balanced with well-designed overhangs, trellis and thoughtful plantings The spaces are generous yet comforting, offering simple details like the large working kitchen, clever storage and woodwork that nears perfection. This home was obtained by new owners in 2009 |

Avenel Homes Cooperative - Silverlake, Los Angeles
The Avenel Homes were commissioned by a collective of WWII veterans who pooled approximately $11,000 each to purchase a small 248 x 124 square foot hillside lot in Silverlake, and pay for the construction of the homes. The neighborhood was fast becoming a center of bohemia in the city, and an adjacent hillside boasted a vegetarian farming commune. On less than a square acre, the multi-family units offered a counter to the suburban single-family homes being developed at the time in other areas of the city, including tracts such as the Mar Vista Homes concurrently being developed by Ain. Working with his firm partners Johnson and Day, Ain spearheaded the design of the ten-unit row house complex constructed of economical wood frame and stucco built on two lots with a common path between. Set at an angle to the street in a "sawtooth" pattern similar that used at his 1039 Dunsmuir Flats apartments, the steep hillside required that Ain stagger the units, each stepped back and looking above one another. A separation betwen garages and the two pedestrian walkways created an intentional intimacy within the project to bring together families and build community. PLAYBOY Lofts!
Architecture as an Aphrodisiac? You tell me! It’s 1965. You’ve just picked up your Jaguar XKE from Flint British Motors (the triple SU carb fed, 4.2 litre six pumping out over 250 BHP, the Perspex headlamp covers gleaming against the primrose yellow paint, you snug against the jet-black leather…) and you have ARRIVED. You know because your sales job at the Hi-Fi center has you rolling out Muntz Stereo-Pak tape cartridge Autostereos at a fast pace that keeps you in ready cash AND a Playboy Club Key-card. So where do you live? No question about it: one of the Bunnies (was it Jan, Jacque, Edna or Molly?) turned you on to the ultra-mod and completely hip Scene: 1123 E. Maryland…The Aphrodisiac Apartments! Flash forward a few decades and just imagine the history these fantastic condos hold. And now, a chance to OWN one! Designed by Modernist Architect Miles Stahm and built in 1964 these were know as the 'Aphrodisiac Lofts' and were featured in the October 1965 issue of Playboy Magazine. Locally, they gained quite a reputation: many just called them the Playboy Apartments. Whatever then name you'll call this home fantastic! now Here you’ll find a generous 900 sq feet of MCM, but a space that offers a serious dose of style not found elsewhere. Consider features such as the dramatic double volume living space, efficient open kitchen and a loft bedroom complete with curved walls. This home has been thoughtfully well updated, but retains much of the original detailing including the Lava rock “waterfall” wall and “pond”, plus dramatic fireplace. The bath has been redone and an indoor laundry area added, a rare find for these homes. The community offers a central pool that you’ll no doubt recognized the referenced shape right away (is that a… wait a minute, a Bunny head?)

In 2003, motivated by his own frustration at not being able to find a modern affordable home for he and his family to live in, Lazor returned to architecture to design one himself. Utilizing the knowledge he'd gleaned from furniture design and manufacture, Lazor emerged from his studio with the ingenious FlatPak house system. The first FlatPak house was shop made and site assembled by Lazor and a skilled team of furniture designers. Some Additional Info on Architect Calvin Straub: Few architects and educators have had such a pervasive influence on architecture as Calvin C Straub.. He created an important body of work as the senior partner of Buff Straub and Hensmen, both previous students at USC. His work was widely published in Sunset Magazine and considered highly influential in shaping the vision iconography of the post-world war II contemporary southern Californian style. His and the firms work bridged the gap between the influences of early arts and crafts architects and the early California modernists, creating a uniquely regional architectural form. For this work and his educational contributions he was described in "Toward a simpler way of Life" as "the father of California post and beam architecture". His desert residence continued and extended the legacy of "design with climate" that he had begun decades again in southern California and preceded the now popular "green movement" in architecture by some 30 years. |

How House -Silverlake, Los Angeles CA
Just five years after his arrival in 1920 to Los Angeles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Chicago office, Schindler completed the How House for Dr. James How, a psychotherapist who had moved from St. Louis to Los Angeles. The interlocking volumes, cubic form, and repeating geometric lines of the How House demonstrate the close relationship of the origins of Southern California modernism to the work of European architects. A sensitive restoration of the property began in approximately 2004, and was designated a City of Los Angeles Historic Cultural Landmark in 2007. (c) Mak Architectural Tour 2009, Los Angeles, CA |

Timeless Adobe: Art. Design. Details. Perfection!
Architect Clint Miller is often honored for his vision of homes designed in harmony with the landscape. This, the Architect's former home, is no exception! Nestled into a beautiful desert lot in North Scottsdale, this home reflects a keen aesthetic and respect for materials, all incorporated into a design that lives fresh, modern and comfortable. Expressing a strong relationship to the earth focusing on simple, natural beauty in a design style utilizing traditional “single use” techniques, Miller used materials such as exposed adobe, natural finished woods and finished concrete to complete his vision – a subtle union of architecture, interior design and tasteful preservation of native terrain to form a “whole space”, acknowledging that this home functions together in harmony with the owner and the site. Millers use of simple and timeless indigenous materials has consistently garnered recognition from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and recently Phoenix Home & Garden magazine honored Miller as a 2010 "Master of the Southwest". Miller’s unique interpretation of traditional Southwest style was also recognized in an AIA Historical Preservation Exhibit in 2009 and featured in AIA Home Tours in 2000, 2009 and 2010 |
